The software company you choose shapes your project's budget, timeline and long-term success. Use these ten criteria to compare the companies you get quotes from.
1. References from similar projects
Check whether the company has shipped projects of a similar type and size to yours. A live website or an app in the stores is far stronger evidence than screenshots in a slide deck. If you can, talk briefly to one of their clients.
2. A clear discovery process
A good software company asks questions before quoting: target users, must-have features, integrations, budget and timeline. Companies that quote immediately without asking anything are more likely to surprise you with scope and cost changes later.
3. A written scope and proposal
The proposal should list the screens, features and integrations that are included, and just as importantly what is out of scope. Comparing vague proposals on price alone is misleading.
4. Technology choices with reasons
The company should explain which technologies it recommends (for example React, Next.js, Node.js, Flutter or React Native) and why. Mainstream, well-supported technologies also make it easier to work with another team later.
5. Design and user experience
Seeing a clickable prototype or design file before development starts catches misunderstandings early. Make sure the design is mobile-friendly and accessible.
6. Regular communication and visible progress
Weekly or bi-weekly demos, a test environment you can access and a single accountable project manager let you always know where the project stands. Agile, sprint-based teams adapt to change more easily.
7. Source code and intellectual property
The contract should state clearly that the source code, design files and assets such as the domain, servers and app store accounts belong to you. Keeping the code in a Git repository under your own account protects you if you ever change vendors.
8. Testing and quality assurance
Ask how the software is tested. Automated tests, code review and testing on real devices before release significantly reduce bugs in production.
9. Security and data protection
Any project that handles personal data must comply with GDPR (and KVKK in Turkey). Secure password storage, HTTPS, proper authorization and regular updates should not be negotiable.
10. Maintenance and support after launch
Software needs updates, security patches and new features after launch. Agree on the scope of maintenance, response times and pricing up front.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I prepare before asking a software company for a quote?
A short document covering the goal of the project, target users, must-have features, example apps you like, your budget range and target date is enough. It gets you more accurate and comparable quotes.
Should I pick the cheapest quote?
Not necessarily. Comparing quotes with different scopes on price alone is misleading. Price becomes meaningful once scope, quality assurance, source code ownership and maintenance terms are comparable.
Can I work with a software company in another country?
Yes. Many companies work remotely with international clients. Check that working hours overlap, communication happens in a language you are comfortable with, and the contract covers ownership and data protection.
